Pharmacology
- Pharmacodynamics: Ciclopirox is a hydroxypyridone antifungal agent that works by chelating polyvalent cations (e.g., Fe³⁺ or Al³⁺), inhibiting metal-dependent enzymes responsible for the degradation of peroxides within fungal cells, leading to cell death. It exhibits a broad spectrum of antifungal activity against dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.
- Pharmacokinetics: When applied topically, ciclopirox is minimally absorbed into the systemic circulation (less than 2% through intact skin). It rapidly distributes into the stratum corneum, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and dermis. The absorbed portion is metabolized and excreted primarily through urine.
